Aldersgate United Methodist Church
Our History

Aldersgate United Methodist Church had its beginnings on September 8, 1954, at 7:30 P.M., when some members of Central United Methodist Church, along with their minister, Dr. Jim Huggins, discussed a need for a church in the western part of Shelby.

On September 28, 1954, a meeting was held at Central United Methodist Church where 52 members from Central and surrounding churches expressed the need for a new church. These representatives became the official board members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. A delegate was elected to attend Annual Conference at Lake Junaluska to request a minister be appointed to Aldersgate.

Reverend W. Baxter Davis, a retired minister, was appointed to serve this church. On October 10, 1954, a worship service was held in the Lutz-Austell Chapel with ninety-three people in attendance.

From 52 persons who committed themselves to be a part of a new church called "Aldersgate" in 1954, we have grown to be an active and vital congregation. Their solid foundation and God's blessings have made it possible for us to enter the twenty-first century well-equipped to be the church God is calling us to be. May we continue to be open to ways God will bless and use us in ministry to our community and the world.
